Are You a Confidential Friend?
Are you a confidential friend? Can you keep a secret, even if the information is really juicy?
Sometimes, we tend to think of gossip as one of those “little” sins. But when God talks about gossip, he puts it on the list with things like sexual immorality and murder. Why? Because it is so destructive to relationships. Gossip can tear apart friendships, families, and churches.
Gossip is talking about a situation with somebody who is neither a part of the problem nor a part of the solution. If we’re honest, what we’re doing is making ourselves feel a little more important at somebody else’s expense. We’re talking about their hurts and their problems to make us feel like we’re morally superior to them. That’s the danger and the hurt of gossip.
Nothing can rip apart a friend group or church group or family like gossip. It’s a sin that kills relationships.
God says, “Anyone who spreads gossip is a fool” (Proverbs 10:18 GNT).
The Bible teaches that those who gossip lack integrity. They can't be trusted. And we’re not going to have God’s blessing on our life if we continue to gossip. Every time we gossip we lose integrity.
Proverbs 11:13 “A gossip can’t be trusted with a secret, but someone of integrity won’t violate a confidence.”
Relational integrity means you don’t talk one way about people in front of them and a different way behind their backs. Relational integrity means not inserting someone else's confidential problems into a prayer request to make it seem like you’re not gossiping.
Do you know what we need today? We need men and women of integrity who know how to keep a secret, and not put it on Facebook or blab it on Twitter or pass it around on social media. Or as soon as somebody says, “I’ve never told this to anybody…” we immediately go and tell it to somebody else. If we do we lack integrity.
If you ever partake in gossip, whether it's spreading or listening, I encourage you to invite Jesus into that area of your life. Just because you have been one way in the past, doesn't mean you have to stay that way. Allow him to work on your heart. Only he can give us a clean heart, full of integrity.
