Can People Tell You're a Christian?
“Everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35 NIV).
The distinguishing mark of a Christian is not a cross, a crucifix, a dove, or a fish on a bumper sticker. The sign of a Christian is love.
That’s what Jesus says. The world will know you are my followers because of the love you have for one another. Not because of all the Bible verses you memorized or Sunday school classes you attended. They’ll know you are a follower of Jesus because of how loving you are.
So, how many people know you’re a Christian because of your loving lifestyle? We sing about love, talk about love, pray about love, and study love. But do we do it? Do people know that you genuinely care about them?
Can you imagine what would happen if everyone in the church loved like Jesus—if we all committed ourselves to acting in love and giving our time unselfishly so that people could experience a taste of how much God loves them? It would change the world.
John 13:34 (Jesus) “So now I am giving you a new commandment: love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other”
Loving like Jesus isn't always easy, but he left us with a model to follow. Jesus is the model. He gave us a model for how to love people in the way he lived his life.
Keep going back to Jesus. Look at his life in scripture. Go back to it over and over again. If you feel unloving or short on patience, read about how he treated people.
Not only did he give us a model to follow, he gave us the Holy Spirit, which gives us the power to love like Christ. If you’re struggling to love a difficult person in your life, ask the Holy Spirit to give you Christ’s love for them. Pray that you would treat them like Jesus would treat them, despite how you naturally feel on the inside when they start to drive you crazy.
John 13:15 “I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.”
If you are a follower of Christ, you must love everybody—whether you like them or not—in the same way that Christ loves you.
