Where's God in My Loneliness?
WHEN I'M LONELY, GOD IS MY COMPANION.
If we just tune in and recognize it. I need to remind myself that God is my companion.
Psalm 25:16 Turn to me and have mercy, for I am alone and in deep distress.
Some of us may be lonely now. There are many different kinds of loneliness. There's the loneliness of death of a spouse or friend. There's the loneliness of the business trip. There's the loneliness of a new school, of growing old, of the husband who won't listen to you, the loneliness of the feeling that you're not understood. There's the loneliness of success -- life at the top is lonely. There are many different kinds of loneliness.
Can you be lonely in a crowd? I think the loneliest time in my life was when I got lost in downtown Tokyo, by myself. Thirteen million people around me, but I was so lonely in the middle of this sea of humanity.
The Bible says that God said the first thing He didn't like about the world when He created it, God looked and said:
Gen 2:18 "It's not good for man to be alone."
God doesn't want us to be alone. He says loneliness isn’t good. But it's something everybody faces at some time. So what do we do when we have those moments of uncontrollable loneliness and we can't do anything about it?
We recognize God's presence. He is our companion.
Hebrews 13:5 God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.”
He is our constant companion. Jesus called us friends, "You are My friends." He's a friend that knows more about us than any other friend. He knows more about us than we do. He understands us. We have a constant companion; God is always with us. When we face a challenge we like to have somebody with us.
Remember your first day at school and you wanted your parents to go with you? We like to have reinforcements. When I am lonely I need to remember that God is my companion, because He says, "I'm always with you." He never asks us to do anything by ourselves.
God didn’t intend for you to go through life alone. He is always with you.
As your pastor, I also encourage you to find a group of people to do life with. God created you to live life alongside other people. A life group is a great way to do that. You need people.
If you aren’t in a life group, email me here. I will help you find one.
