Are You Really Growing Spiritually?

Aug 21, 2026

What does it really mean to be a disciple of Jesus?

It’s more than believing in Him. It’s more than going to church, reading your Bible, or knowing the right answers. Being a disciple means following Jesus—and doing what He says.

Jesus taught, “If you keep on obeying what I have said, you truly are my disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31–32 CEV).

Discipleship is an ongoing process. Jesus says, “If you keep on obeying.”

Notice the words keep on. Spiritual growth doesn’t happen all at once. You don’t hear one sermon, take one class, or have one powerful experience with God and suddenly arrive at spiritual maturity.

Every day, you have opportunities to learn something new about God, trust Him a little more, surrender something to Him, and become a little more like Jesus.

You never outgrow your need to grow.

Jesus connects discipleship with obedience: “If you keep on obeying … you truly are my disciples.”

That’s important because spiritual maturity isn’t measured by how much Bible knowledge you have. It’s measured by what you do with what you know.

You can know the Bible and still refuse to live by it.

In fact, sometimes people who know the most Scripture can be the most judgmental, argumentative, or difficult people to be around. That’s because knowledge by itself doesn’t produce spiritual maturity.

As Paul writes, “Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up” (1 Corinthians 8:1 CSB).

The goal isn’t simply to know more about Jesus. The goal is to become more like Jesus.

The truth you know becomes transformative when you put it into practice.

God’s Word teaches us what is true. It corrects us when we’re headed in the wrong direction, encourages us when we’re discouraged, and gives us wisdom when we don’t know what to do.

That’s why spending time in God’s Word isn’t just another Christian habit to check off your list. It’s how God shapes your heart and transforms your life.

But don’t just read it. Ask yourself: “What does God want me to do with what I just read?”

Then do it!

Spiritual Growth Brings Freedom

Jesus tells us where all of this leads: “The truth will set you free.” God’s truth brings freedom. That doesn’t mean life becomes easy. It means you no longer have to be controlled by the things that once controlled you.

The more you become like Jesus, the more freedom you experience.

And here’s the beautiful part: you don’t have to become spiritually mature overnight.

You simply need to take the next step of obedience. Little by little, day by day, God changes you.
