5 Steps to Getting God's Guidance
Yesterday We talked about the four things we’ve got to stop doing in order to live Spirit-led lives. In order to discern his voice. In order to know where he is guiding us.
So, now, what are the five things we start doing? These are all very easy to understand. Number one, if I want to get guidance from God...
1. I must be WANT to do what God says.
Psalm 40:8 I take joy in your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart.
2. I must be be willing to do what God says.
This sounds like a “duh,” point, but it is so important to mention. A lot of us want to hear from God, but then we don’t want to do the work he’s guiding us to do. So, first, we must be willing to do what he says.
God's not going to show us what he wants to do with our life, and then we get to decide about it. We say, "God, I surrender my life to you completely. I don't just want your will, I'm willing, whatever it is, I don't even understand it, I don't even know it, but whatever it is, I'm willing in advance to obey you."
3. I must look to God's WORD.
I must look to God's Word. God's will is found in God's Word.
Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.
Psalm 119:133 Guide my steps by your Word, so I will not be overcome by any evil.
Most of God's will is already revealed. As we read God's Word, he speaks to us. When we open our Bible, God opens his mouth and he starts talking to us. We discover the will of God in the Word of God.
The key, if you want to be led by the Spirit, start doing what you already know is God's will. Just start doing what you already know is God's will. God's will never contradicts God's Word. If you get an idea, and you can't find a basis verse in the Bible, it's wrong, because God has already given us his Word.
4. I must ASK the Holy Spirit to be my guide.
I must ask the Holy Spirit to be my guide. Do you remember in high school they had a position on the faculty called the school guidance counselor? They were supposed to help us decide if we were going to go to college or get a job or go in the military or whatever, and they were the guidance counselor. We have a guidance counselor for life. He's called the Holy Spirit. We don't just have this book. It's nice to have this book, but what's even nicer is to have the author speaking in our ear, going "This is what this means." One of the reasons we don't know God's will is we don't ask for it.
James 4:2 You do not have, because you do not ask God for it.
One of the best ways to engage our guidance counselor is ask a specific question in prayer.
Psalm 27:11 Teach me how to live, O Lord. Lead me along the right path.
How does he do that? How does God lead me down the right path? Well, there are a lot of different ways, but let me just mention a couple. One of them is, the primary way the Holy Spirit guides us is by reminding us what we've read in this book. Because we read stuff in here, and if we memorize it, then it's stored in the back of our mind. At the right moment, when we're in that conflict at work, God can bring that verse to mind. The Holy Spirit reminds us.
James 1:5-6 (CEV) If any of you need wisdom, you should ask God, and it will be given to you. God is generous and won’t correct you for asking. But when you ask for something, you must have faith and not doubt.
That's why we don't, often don't know what God wants us to do. We're not asking in faith.
5. I must LISTEN for God's response.
This is really a big reason why we don't hear God is because we ask, and then we immediately run off. We don't wait. We don't listen. We don't pause. We just say, "God, I need to know this" and then take off, and then turn on the radio or start listening to your iPhone or answering calls or readings texts or watching TV, and all the circuits are jammed and God can't get through to us for the answer.
I cannot overemphasize the importance of you taking some private time alone every day just to sit quietly and say, "God, is there anything you want to say to me right now?" Then just listen. I've read your Word; I talk to you all throughout the day.
Job 33:14 For God speaks again and again, though people do not recognize it.
He uses the Bible; he uses teachers like what I'm doing right now. He uses impressions, he can use circumstances, he can use pain, he can do all these different things, but the key is to test it by the Word.
Here’s a prayer to pray if you want God’s guidance in your life:
God, I want to be led by your Spirit. I don't want to go through life on my own ingenuity and power. I've had too many dead ends. I know that's not the solution. Lord, starting today there's some stuff I want to stop doing. I'm willing to do whatever you tell me to do. I don't have to understand it. I'm telling you yes in advance. Help me to look to your Word every day. Guide my steps by your Word, so I will not be overcome by any evil. Your Word is a lamp to guide me, and a light for my path. Help me to remember that your will is found in your Word. So, today I ask you Holy Spirit to be my guidance counselor for the rest of my life. I'm asking you humbly, and I'm asking you in faith.
