3 Ways to Use God's Name & Receive Blessings

God promises blessing when we use His name correctly. There are literally hundreds of verses in the Bible that talk about the name of God. And there are promises of incredible blessings for the person who honors God's name.

I want to give us three ways to use God’s name correctly

Treat it with the utmost respect. Use it carefully. Use it lovingly. Use it as an act of worship. Don't just let it slip out flippantly. When we say, "God," mean it in our heart.

Ps. 29:2 Honor the Lord for the glory of his name.

Honor God's name. That is why we have to be careful with what we watch at the movies or Netflix or wherever. It's like a computer: garbage in, garbage out. Whatever goes in our mind will eventually come out in our lifestyle.

Ps. 9:10 "Those who know your name trust in you..."

God has many names, well over 100 names of God in the Bible, each one of them reveal a different aspect of God's character -- love, justice, holiness, the things he's promised to care for. The way we get to know God is to get to know the names of God. When we get to know God's name and reverence Him on a daily basis there are enormous benefits to our life.

2 Timothy 2:19 “The Lord knows those who are his,” and “All who belong to the Lord must turn away from evil.”

Our lifestyle can misuse the name of God. If we call ourselves a believer, we should act like one. If we're going to call ourselves a Christian, we shouldn’t drag Christ's name through the gutter by our lifestyle. Our walk needs to match our talk. If we're a believer, we represent God.

There are two reasons why many people never come to Christ. First, they've never met a Christian. Second, they met one and it was a Christian in name only who claimed to be a Christian but there was no difference in their lifestyle. If we claim to be a believer, a Christian, and use God's name and aren't any different than the world, then we're a bad advertisement. God will hold us accountable for that. We should represent God's name clearly.

The truth is that there are people all around us that are watching and evaluating our speech and our actions, and they're checking to see how we're different in speech and how we're different in our life style. So we guard our mouth, guard our actions.

Ps. 33:21 In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name.

There are 100s of verses in the Bible that say that God has made a number of promises to honor His name. Whatever we do, we should do it in the name of the Lord, trusting and relying on His name. Jesus said, "If you ask anything in My name I will do it." Why do we pray "In Jesus' name"? Because we don't have any right to come to God on our own.  God is perfect and holy and we're not. Only a perfect person can come into His presence. I don't have any right on my own just to come to God and say, "God, this is what I need and request." BUT, Through Christ I can. He's the bridge. And Jesus said, we're to pray in His name.

Should I say, "In Jesus' name" every time I pray? No you don't have to, but it's not a bad idea. It reminds us why we have the privilege and benefit of being able to pray. So, we pray "in Jesus' name," and He said "If you ask anything in My name, then I will do it."
