The Opposite of Fear is Love
“Wherever God's love is, there is no fear, because God’s perfect love drives out fear.” 1 John 4:18 (NCV)
A lot of people think the opposite of fear is faith. It’s not! The opposite of fear is love.
People don’t run into a burning building to rescue children because of faith. They do it because of love. Parents will put their lives at risk to protect their families because they love their babies.
Love moves against fear.
Maybe you aren’t sure if you struggle with fear. We don’t all experience fear in the same way. Anxiety is a form of fear. People pleasing is operating out of fear of rejection or what people may think. Worry is a form of fear.
If you’ve ever allowed dread and anxiety to invade your thoughts, you know living in fear is the opposite of living abundantly.
From Genesis to John, the words, “Do not be afraid” appear again and again, often coming straight from the mouth of Jesus.
So, what do you do when you find yourself afraid or making choices out of fear? Scripture is a great place to start (and, of course, application of the scripture).
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)
Everyone struggles with some form of fear at some point in their life. But, your response to the fear is what matters most.
Truth found in scripture can help. Seeking wise counsel and meeting with a Christian counselor can help. Working through your fears with your small group can help. And, most importantly, Jesus, who loves you can help you in your moment of need.
Jesus loves you unlike anyone else—with a perfect love. A fearless love. If you focus on Him when you’re afraid, you can be fearless, too.
"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8, NIV)
