Transformed by Grace
Romans 12:2 "Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.”
Transformation comes from the changing of your mind. That's where the power is. God wants to change the way we think.
So, how do we change the way we think? A renewed mind isn’t something we do on our own! It’s not positive thinking. It’s not manifestation. It’s not visualization or willpower. It's dependence on God. It's determined dependence on God's grace, because that's where the power is. The power is in His grace. You live the Christian life the same way you started the Christian life. You start it by grace and you live it by grace.
Gal. 3:3 "How foolish can you be? After starting your Christian lives in the Spirit, why are you now trying to become perfect by your own human effort?”
What I'm saying to you today is the Christian life is not a life of keeping rules. That’s not the point. The Christian life is a life of new power. When you surrender your life to Jesus, you go from spiritually dead to spiritually alive. You are given a new life with new power to live in a way that pleases God.
Maybe you've met people who have been trying to live the Christian life by rules or by doing good or by feeling bad, but that's not what the Bible teaches about true Christianity. Real faith in Christ is built on God's grace.
Spiritual growth and transformation is not accomplished by trying hard. It's accomplished by trusting Him.
There are two unforgettable promises from the book of Philippians about how we can trust God to grow us once we come to Him as Christians.
Phil. 1:6 "... God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.”
That's a promise. He’s not going to give up on you. He loves you and accepts you where you are, but he loves you too much to leave you there. He will continue to work on you, renewing your mind.
Others of you may not be a follower of Jesus yet. You may be thinking, "If I come to Him, I don't know if I can make it. I don't know if I can keep up my end of the bargain."
Phil. 2:13 "For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him."
I love that promise! Not only does He help me want to do the right thing, He helps me do the right thing.
You aren’t alone in the transformation process.
That's what grace is all about.
