Don't Trust Your Gut, Trust God's Wisdom

June 25, 2026

Have you ever been absolutely convinced something was the right decision, only to realize later it was a complete mistake?

Maybe it was a relationship you thought would last forever. A job that looked like the perfect opportunity. A financial decision that seemed like a no-brainer. Or advice you were certain would help someone, only to watch it backfire.

We've all been there.

If you really want God's blessing on your life, you have to learn to depend on God's wisdom, not your own.

The Bible says, "There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death." (Proverbs 14:12 NLT)

Notice that word: seems.

There are plenty of paths that seem right. They feel right. They make sense to us. Everyone around us may even tell us they're right. But appearances can be deceiving.

Every one of us could tell a story about following our instincts only to discover we were headed for a dead end.

Looking back, we often wish we had slowed down, prayed more, and listened to God instead of simply trusting our feelings.

The truth is, our feelings are wonderful indicators, but they're terrible leaders.

Feelings change. (They can be helpful information!) But, they fluctuate with our circumstances. They can be influenced by fear, pride, loneliness, anger, or even exhaustion. Just because something feels right doesn't mean it is right.

That's why Proverbs gives us this timeless instruction:"Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take." (Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT)

God never asks us to figure life out on our own. He invites us to trust Him instead. And here's the good news: He doesn't keep His wisdom hidden from us.

James 1:5 says, "If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking."

What an incredible promise.

God isn't frustrated by your questions. He isn't annoyed when you don't know what to do. He welcomes your prayers and delights in giving wisdom to those who ask.

So how do you know if you're living by God's wisdom instead of your own?

The answer is surprisingly simple: God's wisdom and God's will are found in God's Word.

The more time you spend in Scripture, the more you'll recognize God's voice and understand His heart. His Word shapes your thinking, corrects your perspective, and gives you wisdom that your feelings never can.

If we're not in God's Word, we'll struggle to know God's will. But when we consistently seek Him through prayer and Scripture, He faithfully guides our steps.

That's one of the simplest—and most powerful—ways to discover God's will and walk in His wisdom every single day.
