Here is a foundational truth: Jesus Christ paid for your sins on the cross.
Forgiveness isn't something you have to earn. It isn't based on how good you've been, how many good things you've done, or how hard you try to make up for your mistakes.
Forgiveness is based on His grace, His mercy, and His love. I don't know what you've done. But I do know what Jesus has done. And what Jesus has done is greater than what you've done. Whatever your past looks like, whatever mistake you're carrying, whatever sin you're ashamed of, what Jesus did on the cross is enough to cover it. You can be forgiven. But sometimes we struggle to believe that.
Maybe you've asked God to forgive you, but you still don't feel forgiven. Maybe you've confessed your sin, but the guilt keeps coming back. You replay it in your mind. You wish you could go back and undo it. You wonder if God really could forgive that.
But God's forgiveness isn't based on how you feel. When God forgives you, you are forgiven—even when your emotions haven't caught up with the truth.
There is a difference between conviction and condemnation.
Conviction leads us toward God. Condemnation keeps us hiding from Him. God may convict us of sin so that we will confess it and turn back to Him, but He doesn't ask us to spend the rest of our lives punishing ourselves for something He has already forgiven.
Here are four truths about God's forgiveness that we need to remember:
1. God forgives me immediately.
“Let the wicked leave their way of living and change their way of thinking. Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them. Let them turn to our God, and he will forgive them.” — Isaiah 55:7
When you confess your sin and ask God for forgiveness, He doesn't make you wait. He doesn't say, “I'll forgive you after you've suffered long enough.” He doesn't make you prove that you're sorry.
His forgiveness is an expression of His grace.
We sometimes believe that feeling guilty makes us better people. But guilt isn't the goal. Repentance is.
God wants us to acknowledge our sin, take responsibility for it, turn toward Him, receive His forgiveness, and keep moving forward. God forgives you immediately.
2. God forgives me completely.
“God forgave all our sins. He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross.” — Colossians 2:13-14
Think about those words: “all our sins.” Not some of them. Not just the ones you're comfortable admitting. Not just the ones from yesterday. All of them.
Jesus didn't go to the cross so that you could spend the rest of your life punishing yourself for the sins He already paid for. The cross is enough.
When God forgives you, He doesn't hold your sin over your head. He doesn't keep a record so He can bring it up later.
Psalm 103:12 says that He removes our sins as far as the east is from the west. So, stop digging up what God has already buried. You don't have to keep carrying what Jesus already carried for you.
3. God forgives me repeatedly.
Have you ever committed the same sin more than once?
Have you ever felt embarrassed to come back to God and ask Him to forgive you for something you've already asked Him to forgive before?
You aren't the first person to struggle with that. God doesn't get tired of you coming back to Him.
“He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf.” — Hebrews 7:25
That doesn't mean we should take sin lightly. It means that when we fail, we don't have to run away from God—we can run toward Him.
You may have failed again, but God's grace hasn't run out. So, confess it. Turn back to Him. Receive His forgiveness. And keep walking.
4. God forgives me freely.
“He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins.” — Ephesians 1:7
Forgiveness is free to us, but it wasn't cheap. It cost Jesus everything.
You can't earn God's forgiveness. You can't work hard enough to deserve it. You can't be good enough to pay Him back. It's a gift of grace.
And forgiveness is one of the greatest gifts God could ever give us.
So let me ask you something: What are you still carrying that Jesus has already forgiven? What is the secret shame you've been holding onto? What mistake do you keep replaying? What sin have you confessed to God, but continue punishing yourself for?
Maybe today is the day you finally let it go.
“Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sin is put out of sight! Yes, what joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared of guilt.” — Psalm 32:1-2
That's the freedom of God's forgiveness. You don't have to live under the weight of your past. Jesus paid for your sin. God offers you forgiveness. So, confess it, receive His grace, and let go of the guilt.
