“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” Luke 12:6-7 (NIV)
No matter how overlooked, forgotten, or insignificant you may feel, you can always be sure of this: Jesus notices you.
There are moments in life when we feel invisible. Maybe people overlook us. Maybe we feel forgotten in the crowd. Maybe we wonder if anyone truly sees what we’re carrying or understands what we’re going through.
But the good news of the Gospel is that Jesus sees the people everyone else overlooks. One of the clearest examples of this is the story of Zacchaeus in Luke 19.
Zacchaeus was a wealthy man, but wealth didn’t fix his loneliness. He was a tax collector, which meant he was hated by most people in his community. Tax collectors were viewed as corrupt, dishonest, and traitorous. On top of that, Zacchaeus was very short and had likely dealt with ridicule his entire life.
When Jesus came through town, Zacchaeus desperately wanted to see him. But there was a problem: the crowds were too big, and Zacchaeus was too short to see over them.
So, Zacchaeus did two things no wealthy, dignified man of his day would normally do: he ran ahead of the crowd, and he climbed a tree. At that moment, Zacchaeus wasn’t worried about looking foolish. He didn’t care what people thought. He just wanted a glimpse of Jesus.
Then Jesus did something incredible.
The Bible says, “When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up” (Luke 19:5 NIV).
In the middle of a crowded street filled with people competing for attention, Jesus stopped and looked directly at Zacchaeus.
Imagine what Zacchaeus must have felt in that moment. The man who had spent his life being rejected, judged, and overlooked suddenly had the full attention of the Son of God.
Jesus saw him.
Jesus knew his name. Jesus knew his story. Jesus knew his pain, his loneliness, his mistakes, and his longing for something more. And instead of ignoring him like everyone else had, Jesus invited himself into Zacchaeus’ life and home. That encounter changed Zacchaeus forever. Maybe today you feel a little like Zacchaeus.
Maybe you feel unseen in your marriage. Overlooked at work. Forgotten by friends. Buried under stress, anxiety, or loneliness. Maybe you feel like you’re hanging onto a branch emotionally, spiritually, or financially, wondering if anybody notices your struggle.
Jesus does.
There has never been a single moment of your life when God stopped paying attention to you.
Jesus sees every tear you cry. He knows every burden you carry. He hears every prayer you whisper. Even when other people miss what you’re going through, God does not.
That’s why Jesus said, “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God” (Luke 12:6 NIV).
Sparrows were considered extremely small and inexpensive birds in Jesus’ day. Yet Jesus said not even one sparrow is forgotten by God. If God notices tiny birds most people ignore, how much more does he notice you?
“In fact, the very hairs of your head are all numbered” (Luke 12:7 NIV).
So don’t let loneliness convince you that you’ve been abandoned. Don’t let discouragement tell you that you don’t matter.
You are seen by God. You are known by God. And, you are loved by God.
