“Have I mentioned lately that you should read your Bible?”
If you’ve been at SCC for more than one week, you’ve probably heard
me say those words. You should read what the Bible says, directly, for
yourself. Don’t just take my word for it.
For much of Christianity’s history, only priests had Bibles. As a
result, they were the only ones to interpret Scripture. Everyone else
just had to accept what they said.
Then, around 1440, Johannes Gutenberg invented the movable-type
printing press. For the first time, common people had regular access to
Bibles. And people sometimes discovered, “What the priest is telling me
and what I read in the Bible don’t match!”
YOU, yes you, are capable of reading the Bible. Find a translation
that is easy for you to understand, and start. You don’t have to be a
theologian or a pastor to understand scripture.
To understand and grow from the Bible, you have to read it. If you
don’t have a regular Bible reading habit, I encourage you to start
today.
Why read the Bible? To grow closer to God and to grow
spiritually. To apply it. To point you to Jesus. To help you know how to
be more like Jesus.
Some people can read the Bible, check of off their list, and they
never grow from it. You can read the Bible cover to cover and not grow
an inch spiritually.
Your “why” matters. If you read the Bible and you allow God to speak to you and you do what it says… you will experience growth.
If you read it, set it down, and then never apply it, you might as well stick to the sports page.
I love this verse: “Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law” (Psalm 119:18 ESV).
Studying God’s
Word will change your life if you put what you learn in practice — but
it all starts with your willingness to study his Word.
