Every time we choose to be generous, we honor God and bring Him joy.
If you’re a parent, think about how you feel when your children learn to share instead of being selfish. It makes you happy to see them care about others and give freely. In the same way, God delights in seeing His children grow in generosity.
When we give our money, our time, our energy, and our talents to bless others, we reflect the character of our Heavenly Father. It’s an act of worship.
God is the most generous giver of all, and He wants us to become more like Him. When we live generously, we show the world what our Father is like.
But generosity also requires trust. Sometimes, giving means stepping out in faith and believing God will provide what we need. That’s why the promise in the very next verse is so powerful: “God will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:19
What a wonderful promise! God knows what we need, and we can trust Him to care for us. When we’re worried about having enough time, strength, energy, or peace, we can turn to Him and remember that His resources are greater than our limitations.
This doesn’t mean God promises to give us everything we want or that generosity guarantees financial blessings. It means we can trust His faithfulness as we learn to live with open hands and open hearts.
So, when you feel like you don’t have enough to give, remember that generosity isn’t about how much you have. It’s about trusting God with what He’s given you and being willing to use it to bless others.
The more we understand God’s generosity toward us, the more freely we can give to others. We don’t give simply to receive something in return. We give because we love God, want to become more like Jesus, and desire to make His love known.
Ask God to help you live with a generous heart, especially this holiday season. We are about to enter the busiest season of the year for many of us. Where is God inviting you to be more generous this week? Could you give someone your time, offer encouragement, serve a person in need, or share what you have?
