How Do You Respond When Someone Hurts You?

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:21 (NIV)

I don’t know if there’s anything more counter-cultural in our world today than responding to evil with good. And, because it goes against so much of what we see around us, it can also be one of the hardest things to do.

When someone is trying to make trouble in your life, your natural response may be to fight back. You may want to defend yourself, get even, or make sure they feel the same hurt they’ve caused you. But Romans 12:21 gives us a completely different response: “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (NIV).

Overcoming evil with good takes a step of faith. The world tells us to get even and look out for ourselves, but God calls us to something different. He asks us to trust Him enough to respond with His light instead.

You fight darkness with light.

You fight hatred with love.

You fight unkindness with kindness.

You don't let evil overcome you. You overcome evil with good.

Jesus takes it even further: “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44 NIV).

Choosing to respond with love doesn’t mean pretending that what someone did was okay or allowing people to continue to hurt you. It means refusing to let someone else’s actions determine who you will become. You can set healthy boundaries, stand up for what is right, and still choose not to respond in a way that honors God.

Jesus gave us the ultimate example. He didn’t retaliate against those who rejected Him, mocked Him, and crucified Him. Instead, He willingly laid down His life to show the world the depth of God’s love.

God doesn’t want you to retaliate. He wants you to do good. He wants you to show love even to the hardest hearts—to pray for those who hurt you and ask God to work in their lives.

When you choose love instead of revenge, kindness instead of bitterness, and God's way instead of the world's way, you become a powerful witness for Jesus.
