How Humility Strengthens Relationships

May 7, 2026

“Be humble and give more honor to others than to yourselves.” Philippians 2:3 (NCV)

Pride destroys relationships. It shows up in a lot of different ways—criticism, competition, stubbornness, defensiveness, and even superficiality. Pride always pushes us to make life more about ourselves. The problem with pride is that it’s self-deceiving. When you struggle with pride, you usually can’t see it in your own life—but everyone else can.

Proverbs 16:18 says, “Pride leads to destruction; a proud attitude brings ruin” (NCV). I love how The Message paraphrases that verse: “First pride, then the crash—the bigger the ego, the harder the fall.”

Pride tears relationships apart, but humility brings people together. Humility is the antidote to pride, and healthy relationships are built on it.

Philippians 2:3 tells us, “Be humble and give more honor to others than to yourselves” (NCV). And 1 Peter 3:8 adds, “Everyone must live in harmony, be sympathetic, love each other, have compassion, and be humble” (GW).

Humility doesn’t mean thinking less of yourself. It means thinking of yourself less. It’s choosing to listen instead of always needing to win. It’s being teachable, quick to apologize, and willing to put others first.

So how do you grow in humility? You let Jesus Christ begin to shape your thoughts, heart, attitude, and reactions. Ephesians 4:23-24 says, “Let the Spirit change your way of thinking and make you into a new person” (CEV).

The basic law of relationships is this: You tend to become like the people you spend time with. If you spend time with negative people, negativity rubs off on you. If you spend time with kind and encouraging people, you become more kind and encouraging yourself.

The same is true spiritually. If you want to become a more humble person, spend time with Jesus. He is the ultimate example of humility. By building a relationship with him through prayer and reading his Word, you’ll begin to think more like him and respond more like him.

Philippians 2:5-6 says, “You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to” (NLT).

Jesus left heaven to come to earth for you. He served people, loved people, sacrificed for people, and ultimately gave his life for people. That’s humility. And the more time you spend with him, the more that humility will begin to shape your life and strengthen your relationships.
