Listening for God's Voice

October 9, 2025

In Luke 8:8, Jesus told the crowd, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear” (NIV). He wasn’t just talking about physical hearing—He was inviting people to really listen, to tune their hearts to God’s truth.

God still speaks today—and He wants to speak to you personally. The question is: are you making space to listen? Or, are you too busy to hear him?

When you hear from God, it’s evidence of a living relationship with Him. It’s one thing to know about God; it’s another to know Him. And just like any close friendship, communication is key.

You talk to God in prayer—and He speaks to you through His Word, through the Holy Spirit, through circumstances, and through other people.

Listening to God doesn’t just deepen your relationship; it also protects you from mistakes. When you quiet your mind and pay attention to His voice, He’ll warn you about the potholes and pitfalls ahead. You’ll save yourself heartache, wasted time, and unnecessary frustration when you follow His lead.

The Message paraphrase of Proverbs 3:6 reminds us, “Listen for God’s voice in everything you do and everywhere you go. He’s the one who will keep you on track.” I can’t count the number of times God has spared me from disaster with just a few simple words: “Don’t.” “Wait.” “Watch out.” Those gentle whispers are often all it takes to change our direction—or even our destiny.

And hearing from God doesn’t just keep you from harm—it moves you toward the kind of success that truly matters. Not the world’s version of success measured by wealth, status, or applause, but God’s version: becoming exactly who He made you to be. Real success is living in the center of His will and walking in step with His plan.

Psalm 32:8 (NLT) says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.” God’s path for you is uniquely yours. What’s best for someone else might not be what’s best for you—and that’s why hearing His voice is so important. Only He can lead you down the route that fulfills your purpose and brings you lasting peace.

Jesus said, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27 NLT). When you take time to slow down, quiet the noise, and listen for your Shepherd’s voice, you’ll find guidance, comfort, and confidence for every step ahead.

Take time to listen to your Good Shepherd today—He’s speaking, and what He has to say can change everything.
