The Bible tells us time and time again: Don’t Worry. We know this, so, why is it so hard to quit worrying?
Worry consumes our time and energy, but it doesn’t change our circumstances. It can’t solve tomorrow’s problems or meet today’s needs.
Today, let’s talk about what to do to stop worrying and begin trusting God instead.
The Bible gives us four practical steps.
1. Ask Jesus to Be Your Shepherd Every Day
“The Lord is my shepherd” isn’t simply a comforting phrase—it’s a declaration of trust. Begin each morning by saying, “Jesus, you are my Shepherd. I trust you to lead me, care for me, and meet my needs today.”
Repeat that truth whenever worry begins to rise. Before a difficult meeting, a parent-teacher conference, or an important decision, remind yourself: “The Lord is my Shepherd.”
Jesus said: “I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me … So I sacrifice my life for the sheep.” —John 10:14–15
Jesus loved you enough to give his life for you. You can trust him to lead you and care for you today.
2. Put God First in Every Area
“Your heavenly Father already knows all your needs.” —Matthew 6:32
God already knows what you need, but he still invites you to depend on him.
Worry can be a warning light that reveals an area we haven’t fully surrendered to God. It may involve our family, finances, career, health, relationships, or future.
Ask yourself, “What am I most worried about right now? Have I truly given that area to God?”
Putting God first doesn’t mean every problem will immediately disappear. It means we no longer have to carry those problems alone. When Jesus is Lord over every area of our lives, our priorities become clearer and our hearts become more secure.
3. Give God Your Worries in Prayer
“Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.” —1 Peter 5:7
God doesn’t ask you to pretend that your worries aren’t real. He asks you to give them to him.
If you feel anxious but aren’t sure why, stop and identify what is troubling you. Write your worries down if that helps. Then pray through the list, giving each concern to God.
“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.” —Philippians 4:6
Prayer replaces panic with peace. God’s peace isn’t based on the absence of problems. It comes from the presence of God.
4. Trust God One Day at a Time
“So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” —Matthew 6:34
Worry borrows trouble from tomorrow. When we focus on problems that haven’t happened yet, we miss the blessings God has given us today.
We also can’t solve tomorrow’s problems with today’s strength. When tomorrow arrives, God will provide the grace, wisdom, perspective, and power we need. That’s why Jesus taught us to pray for our daily bread—not our weekly, monthly, or yearly bread. God wants us to depend on him one day at a time.
It’s wise to plan for the future, but planning and worrying are not the same. Planning prepares us for tomorrow; worrying keeps us from living today.
You don’t have to handle your entire future at once. God has graciously divided life into 24-hour segments. He will meet you each morning with fresh mercy and enough grace for that day.
