“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:21 (NIV)
This is not what our culture teaches us. In fact, it may be one of the most counter-cultural commands we could live out today. The world tells us to protect ourselves at all costs, to get even. But Jesus calls us to something entirely different.
Forgiveness. Grace. Turning the other cheek. Loving instead of retaliating. These ideas don’t come from culture—they come from Christ.
Jesus teaches us that darkness is not defeated by more darkness, but by light. Hatred is not overcome by more hatred, but by love. Unkindness is not healed by retaliation, but by kindness. Evil is not conquered by matching it—but by responding with good.
And if we’re honest, that kind of response requires real faith. It’s difficult. It goes against our instincts.
And then Jesus raises the bar even higher: “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44, NIV).
Pray for them? Our enemies? The people who hurt us, misunderstand us, oppose us, or actively work against us? That doesn’t come naturally. That’s why you need the love of Christ in you to do it.
When we pray for our enemies, we’re asking God to do what only He can do: soften hearts, heal wounds, bring conviction, and restore what’s broken.
Praying for those who offend us is also one of the most powerful ways to guard our own hearts. It releases the burden of revenge and places the battle in God’s hands. It allows the Holy Spirit to give us the self-control to not retaliate, the wisdom to respond with grace, and the peace to trust that God sees and will act in His time.
The closer we draw to Jesus, the more our reactions begin to look like His. And Jesus showed us the ultimate example of loving and praying for enemies—even from the cross.
We are to speak the truth… in love.
"Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church." – Ephesians 4:15
So take the step of faith. Overcome hate with love. It won’t always be easy—but it will always be worth it. And through it, God will use your obedience as a powerful witness to His transforming grace.
