“Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless person living on earth at the time, and he walked in close fellowship with God.” Genesis 6:9 (NLT)
Did you know there was a 120 year gap between when God told Noah to build the arc and the rain?
Imagine being asked to do something that had never been done before—while everyone around you thought you were crazy.
What gave him the courage to keep building the ark year after year despite ridicule, uncertainty, and opposition? The answer wasn't extraordinary determination. It was an extraordinary relationship with God.
Hebrews 11:7 says, “Faith led Noah to listen when God warned him about the things that he could not see” (GW).
Noah recognized God's voice because he stayed close to God.
The closer we walk with God, the more familiar we become with his voice.
That's why spending time with God every day is so important. As you read his Word, talk with him in prayer, slow down, and quietly listen, your heart becomes more sensitive to his leading.
Genesis 6:9 tells us that Noah "walked faithfully with God" (NIV). The New Living Translation says he "walked in close fellowship with God." That's a beautiful picture of the Christian life. God isn't calling us to simply believe in him—he invites us to walk with him every day.
What does it mean to walk with God?
First, it means affiliation. You're not ashamed to belong to him. Your identity is found in Christ, and you're willing to let others know you follow Jesus.
Second, it means agreement. Amos 3:3 asks, "Can two people walk together without agreeing on the direction?" When we walk with God, we choose to trust his wisdom over our own. We surrender our plans to his and obey his Word, even when it's difficult.
Third, it means alignment. As you walk with God, your life will naturally look different from the world around you. God's values are often countercultural. You won't always fit in—but you'll always be walking in the right direction.
Noah's courage didn't come from self-confidence. It came from God-confidence. Because he walked closely with God, he wasn't controlled by criticism, rejection, or fear of the future—not even the threat of a worldwide flood.
The same is true for us today. The closer you walk with God, the less you'll be controlled by the opinions of people or the uncertainty of tomorrow.
When you're walking with the One who holds the future, you can face whatever comes with confidence and peace.
