The Difference Between Believing in Jesus

and Following Him

May 14, 2026

What does it really mean to make Jesus the Lord of your life?

It means surrendering every part of your life to him—the good, the bad, the ugly, and even the hidden parts you hope nobody else sees. It means turning over your past, your present, and your future. It means giving him authority over your finances, your relationships, your career, your health, your dreams, your fears, and your decisions. Every area. Nothing held back.

Romans 10:9 says, “If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

That’s not wishful thinking. That’s a promise from God. The verse doesn’t say, “You might be saved,” or “You can hopefully make it to heaven someday.” It says you will be saved. God wants you to live with confidence in what Jesus has done for you.

According to this verse, salvation involves two things: believing in your heart that Jesus rose from the dead and confessing with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord.”

Most people have no problem with the second part. Many people believe Jesus was a real historical figure who rose from the dead. The resurrection of Jesus is one of the most documented events in history. Even our calendar is divided by his life.

But the first part—making Jesus “Lord”—is where many people struggle.

We don’t use the word “Lord” much in modern culture, especially in America. We don’t live under kings or monarchies, so the meaning can feel distant to us. But in biblical times, the word “Lord” meant master, ruler, or authority.

So when you say, “Jesus is my Lord,” you’re saying:

“Jesus, you are in charge now.”

“You call the shots.”

“You lead, and I follow.”

He’s not just part of your life; he becomes the center of your life. He’s not simply resident in your heart—he’s president. He’s the CEO, the manager, the director of your life. You stop trying to sit on the throne and allow him to take his rightful place.

That’s difficult for many people because we naturally want control. We want to direct our own lives, make our own plans, and call our own shots. But the truth is, we were never meant to carry the weight of being our own god. And honestly, how’s that working for us? Trying to control everything leads to stress, anxiety, frustration, and exhaustion. Why? Because we don’t have the power to control the future, fix every problem, or hold our lives together perfectly. Only God does.

One of the greatest moments of peace in your life comes when you finally stop trying to be in control of everything and fully trust Jesus instead.

Making Jesus Lord doesn’t mean you’ll never face problems. It means you no longer face them alone. It means you trust the One who truly has the power, wisdom, and love to lead your life better than you ever could.

Where do you need to surrender control and allow Jesus to truly be Lord in your life?
