Jesus said in John 15:14, “You are my friends if you do what I command” (NLT).
You can’t say you love Jesus and then live completely opposed to the way he calls you to live. You can’t call yourself a follower of Christ while ignoring the very things he teaches. Real friendship with Jesus changes the direction of your life.
That doesn’t mean Christians are perfect. We all stumble, fail, and need God’s grace every single day. But when Jesus truly changes your heart, he also changes your desires. You begin to want what honors him.
A lot of nonbelievers misunderstand obedience to God. They think Christians obey out of guilt, fear, or obligation. They think following Jesus means giving up freedom and fun. But that’s not why believers obey God at all. But really, we obey God because he loves us—and because we love him.
God’s commands are not designed to rob you of joy; they are meant to protect you and lead you toward the life you were created to live. The Bible says God is love, and everything he asks of us flows out of his love for us.
People have told me, “You’re restricted because you’re a Christian. You can’t do all the fun things everybody else does.” I would just respond, “I could do all those things if I wanted to. But Jesus changed my want to.”
That’s the difference Jesus makes. Following Christ is not just behavior modification; it’s heart transformation. God changes you from the inside out. The things that once seemed appealing begin to lose their grip because you’ve discovered something better.
The truth is, sin always overpromises and underdelivers. It may offer temporary excitement, but it eventually leaves emptiness, regret, and pain behind. What looks like freedom often becomes bondage. But Jesus leads to real freedom, real peace, and real joy.
Jesus said, “I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. . . . When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!” (John 15:9-11 NLT).
Notice the connection Jesus makes between obedience and joy. God doesn’t ask you to obey him because he wants to make your life miserable. He asks you to trust him because he loves you and wants what is best for you.
Obedience rooted in love always leads to deeper joy, greater peace, and a closer relationship with Jesus.
