You’ll never find lasting happiness in pleasure, power, possessions, positions, or prestige. You also won’t find it in success, sex, salary, or status. All of those things may feel good for a moment, but their satisfaction quickly fades. They can also all be taken from you. And, if that happens… then what?
Real, lasting joy doesn’t come from what you get in life—it comes from what you give.
God designed you to live a life of service. Why? Because he wants you to become more like him. God is love, and love is expressed through giving. When you learn to give your life away for the good of others, you discover what joy truly means.
The more you focus on yourself, the more miserable you become. Our culture constantly tells us, “Do what makes you happy,” but the truth is, that path leads to emptiness. The key to joy is shifting from an inward focus—“It’s all about me”—to an outward focus—“It’s all about God and serving others.”
The Apostle Paul modeled this beautifully. He wrote, “I will rejoice even if I lose my life, pouring it out like a liquid offering to God, just like your faithful service is an offering to God. And I want all of you to share that joy” (Philippians 2:17 NLT). Paul found joy even in hardship because his life was dedicated to serving others for God’s glory.
God didn’t give you talents, passions, and experiences just for your own benefit. The Bible says, “God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another” (1 Peter 4:10 NLT). When you use your gifts to bless others, something powerful happens—God fills your heart with purpose and joy.
The most helpful people are the happiest people because they’ve tapped into God’s design for life.
So if you’re feeling weary, empty, or joyless today, don’t look inward—look outward.
As you give your life away, you’ll find that joy comes rushing back in ways you never expected.
