Why We Need Each Other

When you go on vacation, you probably ask a neighbor to look after your house while you’re gone—to check for packages, care for pets, and make sure nothing suspicious takes place while you’re away. It’s a normal, wise thing to do.

It’s very common to have someone watch out for your home. But what about having a trusted friend watch out for your soul?

Who in your life is looking out for you spiritually—someone who will defend you, protect you, pray for you, and help you stay on track when things get hard?

No matter who you are or how long you’ve been following Jesus, you need people who will look out for you and lovingly warn you of spiritual traps. You weren’t meant to do life—or faith—alone. Those people are meant to be found in your church family. In fact, that’s what the family of God is all about.

Philippians 2:4 says, “Look out for one another’s interests, not just for your own” (GNT).

We all have blind spots—areas of struggle, weakness, and temptation we can’t always see clearly on our own. That’s where your church family comes in. They help you notice what you might miss. They stay vigilant, watching for the enemy when you’re tired, discouraged, or distracted.

Because you do have an enemy who wants to destroy your life. Before you even wake up, Satan is already at work, looking for ways to defeat you through temptations and trials, dead ends and detours. He fights with an arsenal of hurts, habits, and hang-ups. And if you try to face him alone, that arsenal can leave you worn down and defeated.

That’s why God designed us for community—for a circle of believers who will stand with you, help you, and remind you of truth when you forget it.

Ecclesiastes 4:12 says, “A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken” (NLT).

Community—your church family—is God’s answer to spiritual defeat. We are always better, stronger, and safer together.
