The Living Bible paraphrase says, “Some of these people have missed the most important thing in life—they don’t know God” (1 Timothy 6:21).
That’s tragic. A person can be successful, educated, popular, wealthy, and admired by the world—and still miss the most important thing in life: knowing God personally. You can know the latest trends, sports scores, headlines, stock prices, and social media drama, but still miss the very reason you were created.
You were made for a relationship with God.
James 4:4 says, “You should know that loving the world is the same as hating God. Anyone who wants to be a friend of the world becomes God’s enemy” (NCV).
James isn’t saying we shouldn’t love people in the world. In fact, Jesus commands us to love people. God is love and God loves people. What James is talking about is the world’s value system—the mindset that pushes God aside and places success, pleasure, money, image, popularity, and status above everything else.
And if we’re honest, it’s easy to get distracted by those things.
The world constantly tells us to chase more: more recognition, more possessions, more followers, more comfort, more applause. But none of those things can satisfy the deepest needs of your soul. They were never meant to replace God. The more consumed we become with materialism, pleasure, prestige, and position, the less room there is in our hearts for what truly matters.
God cares about people. He cares about character. He cares about love, humility, integrity, generosity, compassion, and truth. He’s far more interested in who you are becoming than the image you’re trying to project. Real friendship with God means learning to care about what he cares about. It means allowing his priorities to become your priorities. What matters to him begins to matter to you.
One of the ways we show love to people is by taking an interest in what matters to them. The same is true in our relationship with God. The closer you grow to him, the more your heart begins to reflect his heart.
So here’s the question: What is shaping your values right now—the culture around you or the God who created you?
If you want a deeper friendship with God, start by valuing what he values. That’s where real life begins.
What’s one practical way you can prioritize your friendship with God this week?
